Over 150 surgeons from India and abroad gathered together for the IAGES Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Colo Rectal Surgery (FALS-CRS) 2017 organised by the Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (iMAS), Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi this October 13-15, 2017 under the aegis of the Indian Association of Gastrointestinal Endo Surgeons (IAGES). Starting each day sharply at 8AM, Fellows, Delegates and Faculty interacted intensively over the fundamentals and intricate details of minimal access colo rectal surgery. The mandate set by the FALS-CRS 2017 Team under its Organising Chairman, Dr. Parveen Bhatia and Organising Secretary Dr. Suviraj John was to provide the latest academic training possible to the course fellows and delegates along with warm hosting by Organising Co-Chairman Dr. Sudhir Kalhan, Organising Co-Secretaries Dr. Mukund Khetan and Dr. Vivek Bindal. The course had the full support of the IAGES office in Dr. Zameer Pasha, President IAGES, Dr. Sayandev Dasgupta, Secretary IAGES, Dr. HP Garg, FALS Convenor and IAGES Zonal Executives. It was inaugurated by one of India’s eminent physician’s, Prof. PS Gupta, senior physician at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Kick-starting the course on Friday morning was Dr. Steven Bollipo, Director, Gastroenterology & Endoscopy, John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, who delivered a master-class on how to perform an optimal colonoscopy. This was followed lectures by a host of national faculty drawn from all four corners of the country teaching various aspects of the course theme.
The issue of Colo Rectal Malignancy, being the dominant subject, was dealt with incisively by leading national and international onco surgical faculty from leading centers in India, besides Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, such as Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai, and centers from the USA, Taiwan and the UK. Cutting edge evidence from proven and evolving fields of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS), Robotic Colo Rectal Surgery, Cyto-Reductive Surgery (CRS), Minimal Access Hyperthermic Intra Peritoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) and Trans Anal Procedures (e.g. TaTME) were highlighted by Dr. Conor Delaney, Chairman, Digestive Disease and Surgery Institute, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA, Dr. William Tzu-Liang Chen, Chairman, Surgery, Chinese Medical University Hospital, Taichung, Taiwan and Dr. CR Selvasekar, Sr. Colo Rectal Surgeon, The Christie’s, Manchester, UK.
Through the course, iMAS faculty brought the fundamentals to context – Dr. Parveen Bhatia stressed on the primacy of surgical safety, Dr. Suviraj John on minimal access technique for oncological completeness, Dr. Sudhir Kalhan on long term surgical outcomes and Dr. Khetan on technical detail. The highlights of the final day were a master class on pelvic anatomy in relation to performing a Laparoscopic Total Mesorectal Excision (TME) for a Low Anterior Resection (LAR) by Dr. Shailesh Puntambekar, Galaxy Care Hospital, Pune, Laparoscopic Total Proctocolectomy by Dr. Rajesh Bhojwani from SDMH, Jaipur, Laparoscopic Ventral Rectopexy by Dr. Roy Patankar, Zen Hospital, Mumbai, Virtual Live Master Video Class by Dr. S. Rajapandian and Stapled Hemorrhoidectomy by Dr. Vivek Bindal from iMAS. The course was completed with a written examination and interview for credentialing appropriate candidates in the science of Laparoscopic Colo Rectal Surgery by IAGES faculty under the strict scrutinizing supervision of the FALS Convenor Dr. HP Garg. This is the second FALS Course organised by iMAS this year after the FALS-HPB Course earlier in February 2017, both of which were heavily attended.
We thank God Almighty for His blessings upon iMAS and look forward to new academic vistas in 2018 through His Guidance!
